Middle East and North Africa Program Intern
Description
Each year, BIC's Middle East and North Africa (MENA) program offers an internship opportunity to a candidate from one of our focus countries with the aim of building capacity of local civil society actors. In 2010, we are offering this opportunity to a candidate from Lebanon. This internship will give the successful candidate the opportunity to come to Washington, D.C. to learn about issues of development, particularly transparency and accountability, sustainable energy, and community involvement in the programs of the World Bank Group and other international financial institutions (IFIs), as well as how those issues relate to the MENA region, with a focus on Lebanon. Our informal, dynamic structure enables interns to become immersed in BIC's day-to-day operations and gain extensive practical experience and knowledge of the IFIs in general, and the World Bank in particular.
Principal Responsibilities
Some activities include researching IFI activities in the region and preparing written updates in English and/or Arabic; doing brief translations; attending meetings, conferences and events in Washington, D.C. on issues relevant to our work; updating and maintaining our contact database; and assisting in general office operations. The successful candidate will also help to develop our Lebanon-specific material, including information for our webpage on Lebanon and an in-depth country study. While not absolutely crucial, the selected candidate is expected to return to Lebanon after the internship and continue to meet periodically with the Lebanon Budget Project (LBP) – BIC’s main partner in Lebanon, for at least 6 months with the goal of sharing their experiences with them.

Additional Details
The intern will be based in Washington D.C. The start-time for the internship is flexible but must begin sometime between September 2010 and January 2011. The internship would be for a period of 6 months though if the selected candidate is unable to stay in Washington for the full 6 months for any reason, the terms are negotiable. BIC will not cover the intern's travel or accommodation expenses, though will provide a stipend of US$1000/month.
As BIC’s main partner in Lebanon, the Lebanon Budget Project (LBP) is helping to facilitate the selection process for this internship.
