Regions

BIC pursues its mission through three major strategies:

information services and capacity building;
project and policy monitoring; and
policy reform of the MDBs.

These strategies require our persistent engagement with NGOs and grassroots social movements around the world to support their efforts to participate in and influence development decisions. For this reason, we have organized a large part of BIC’s program work by geographic regions, with staff dedicated to Asia, Latin America, Africa, and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Africa Despite the stated commitments of the World Bank, the G-8 and other donors to poverty reduction and sustainable development in Africa, the number of Africans living in poverty is increasing. Today, over half of the continent’s 750 million people subsist on less than one dollar a day – nearly twice as many as a quarter century ago – and 34 of the world’s 48 poorest countries are found in Africa.

Asia As two of the largest public sources of development financing in Asia, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) are largely responsible for setting economic development agendas in Asian countries.

Europe/Central Asia The International Financial Institutions (IFIs) have made major investments in the countries of the Caucasus, Central Asia and Eastern Europe. Since 1995, BIC’s Europe and Central Asia (ECA) Program has been working to improve the lending policies of IFIs in the region and to ensure that the projects they finance serve the interests of local populations.

Latin America Since 1992, the Bank Information Center (BIC) has worked with communities affected by the policies and projects of multilateral development banks in Latin America. Along with the World Bank and several other institutions, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has long been a focus of the Bank Information Center’s monitoring activities.

Middle East and North Africa Who stands to gain from increased lending by the World Bank and other institutions in the Arab world? Will their support for private sector investment and trade benefit the rich or the poor? BIC's pilot MENA program will focus on the role, operations and impacts of international financial institutions (IFIs) in the region and civil society perspectives on development.
