Regions

BIC pursues its mission through three major strategies:

  • information services and capacity building;
  • project and policy monitoring; and
  • policy reform of the MDBs.

These strategies require our persistent engagement with NGOs and grassroots social movements around the world to support their efforts to participate in and influence development decisions. For this reason, we have organized a large part of BIC’s program work by geographic regions, with staff dedicated to Asia, Latin America, Africa, and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Choose a link below to learn about BIC’s work in each region, including regional partner organizations, Multilateral Development Banks active in the region, problem projects on which BIC is active, and more.

Africa Despite the stated commitments of the World Bank, the G-8 and other donors to poverty reduction and sustainable development in Africa, the number of Africans living in poverty is increasing. Today, over half of the continent’s 750 million people subsist on less than one dollar a day – nearly twice as many as a quarter century ago – and 34 of the world’s 48 poorest countries are found in Africa.

Asia As two of the largest public sources of development financing in Asia, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) are largely responsible for setting economic development agendas in Asian countries.
