World Bank announces dates for first Energy Strategy consultations

The Bank has initiated the first round of consultations on its Energy Strategy by opening online comments to the public and publishing dates for meetings in select countries. The consultations will last until June of this year.

On January 19th, stakeholders were invited to begin commenting on the Bank's Energy Strategy approach paper, published in October 2009. The same day, the first dates for in person consultations were announced. Eventually, the Bank will hold consultations in each region where it is active, certain low income countries with energy poverty, and at least two global meetings. So far, consultations have been announced through March 12, and include meetings in India, Bangladesh, France, Germany and the United States.

This first round of consultations will run until June of this year, at which point the Bank will draft a new strategy, to be released around September. After that, there will be a two month web only comment period, leading into the drafting of the final strategy, and a decision by the Board in 2011. The consultations will be open to all stakeholders in the Bank's Energy Strategy.
