Venezuela: Sweetening the Rhetoric on Brazilian Ethanol

Chavez takes a more diplomatic approach to discussions between Venezuela and Brazil on Brazil's production of ethanol and its agreement with the United States.
At the South American Energy Summit on April 16th and 17th, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez toned down his rhetoric against ethanol. In making this conciliatory gesture toward Brazil, Chavez is trying to avoid a serious rift between Caracas and Brasilia that might undermine his regional ambitions.
