Civil society advises Bank of the South

Over 50 civil society experts on International Financial Institution (IFI) issues and former IFI staff gathered in Ecuador in late June with the hope of playing a fundamental role in the configuration of the Bank of the South.

Last June, more than 50 civil society experts on International Financial Institutions (IFIs) and former IFI staff assembled in Quito to offer advice on the creation process of the Bank of the South. The advice given covered a wide range of issues that define whether the Bank of the South will be different from the existing IFIs such as the World Bank.

The meeting comes as the Bank of the South is reported to be in the final stages of its design process.   Latin American civil society organizations focused on poverty and human rights are convinced that they had played a fundamental role in the configuration of the Bank of the South and feel a "great ownership over the Bank of the South", according to a recent article by Eurodad

A civil society representative was quoted as saying that, “the Bank of the South is our dream, and governments should now live up to their people’s hopes and expectations.”
