Environmental Policy at the ADB

The ADB is reviewing its Environment Policy, which was written for the first time in November 2002. The Bank had been operating since 1966 with only environment-related operational guidelines in place.

The current revision of the Environment Policy has been undertaken under the Safeguard Policy Update exercise which the ADB initiated in July 2005.

Earlier, between February and December in 2001, the ADB sought comments and recommendations on its then draft Environment Policy through consultations with governments, the private sector, NGOs, and ADB staff. Though the consultation process was quite thorough, many civil society groups believed the process had been somewhat futile because versions of the policy updated after the consultations did not include, or contained largely watered down, comments or recommendations from civil society.
